The purpose of this study was to identify burden and care need of the brain injured patient`s family, to identify demographic characteristics which influenced burden and care need and to determine the relationship between burden and care need.
The subjects in this study were 114 family members of brain injured patient who were hospitalized in 2 university hospital, 7 general hospital and 3 oriental medicine hospitals located in Daegu and the surroundings.
The instruments for this study were the Burden Scale developed by Suh, Mi Hye and Oh, Ga Sil and the Family Need Scale developed by Won, Dong Hee.
The data were collected for 3 weeks from 10th, September to 1st, October, 1999.
The data were computerized by using SAS program and analyzed by percentage, mean, t-test, ANOVA and pearson`s correlation.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The mean score of burden was 3.22
2. The demographic characteristics influencing burden on the brain injured patient`s family were economic status(F=3.23, p<0.05), relation of patients and their family(F=4.98, p<0.0l) and caring time in hospital per day(F=9.00, p<0.0l).
3. The only characteristic of patient influencing burden on the brain injured patient`s family was cause of brain injury(F=6.16, p<0.01).
4. The mean score of care need was 3.38.
5. The only demographic characteristic influencing care need of the brain injured patient`s family was caring time in hospital per day(F=5.04, p<0.0l).
6. The only characteristic of patient influencing care need of the brain injured patient`s family was degree of responsibility for family life before brain injury(F=3.94, p<0.05).
7. The degree of burden and care need of the brain injured patient`s family had positive correlation statistically(r=0.31, p<0.01).
